چکیده
Methods Eleven patients (6 males and 5 females) were diagnosed and treated for iatrogenic tracheal rupture in our clinic. The laceration occurred after orotracheal intubation in 7 cases, and during percutaneous tracheostomy and emergency tracheostomy in the other 4 cases, respectively. Diagnosis was made during thoracic surgery in 5 cases. The remaining cases were diagnosed in the post-operative period; the most common symptoms were mediastinal emphysema and pneumothorax.

Tracheal lacerations are iatrogenic, localized, low impact injuries with longitudinal tears (in about 1:20,000 intubations). In contrast traumatic tracheobronchial ruptures are high velocity injuries with horizontal transections. Between 1986 and 2002, we treated 27 tracheobronchial injuries (8 bronchial 3 of them iatrogenic, 19 tracheal 17 of them iatrogenic (þ1 horizontal rupture þ 1 tracheoe...

BACKGROUND Iatrogenic tracheal rupture is a rare complication after intubation. Overinflation of the tracheal cuff was speculated to be a frequent cause of tracheal rupture. The surgical approach is a widespread treatment for tracheal ruptures. The aim of this study is to evaluate the results of conservative and surgical therapy approaches in tracheal rupture cases inflicted by tracheal intubat...
متن کاملManagement of Postintubational Tracheal Injury by Endoscopic Stent Placement: Case Report and Review of the Literature
Endobronchial stent placement is a novel therapy for treatment of iatrogenic tracheal tears. A review of the available literature shows surgery and long-term intubation being the established treatment strategy. We describe the case of a 64-year-old woman with a tracheal rupture following endotracheal intubation for routine surgery. Pneumo-mediastinum and chest pain were the predominant symptoms...
متن کاملIatrogenic tracheobronchial ruptures - treatment and outcomes.
In the present paper we discuss the indication and follow-up of 42 patients with iatrogenic tracheobrochial ruptures. Thirty-five patients were treated by operation and 7 patients were treated conservatively. In the operated patients, four developed an insufficiency of the tracheal closure and the rupture related mortality was 2.8%. A significant effect on suture dehiscence was seen for mediast...
